Unnamed hackers reportedly attempted a cyberattack against the United Kingdom's (UK) Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), specifically targeting Radioactive Waste Management (RWM), the backbone of the UK's Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) nuclear waste project. These attackers sought to exploit the organizational changes following a recent merger involving the organization and leveraged social engineering tactics via LinkedIn to connect with employees and send them phishing messages.
No impact was reported and the attack was detected and stopped at an early stage. Nonetheless, the event serves as a reminder of the importance to train employees to counter social engineering across social media.
